KKN Gurugram Desk | The oppressive summer heat in Bihar shows no signs of relenting, as large parts of the state remain under a heatwave alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). With temperatures soaring up to 42°C, but feeling like 50°C due to rising humidity, residents are battling severe discomfort and health risks.

The weather department has extended its heatwave warning till June 15, with no significant rainfall expected during this period. Authorities are urging people, especially vulnerable groups, to take precautions and stay indoors during peak hours.

Key Weather Facts (Updated June 13, 2025)

  • Real Feel Temperature: Up to 50°C

  • Actual Temperature Recorded: 42.4°C

  • Humidity: As high as 81%

  • Average Wind Speed: 2 km/h

  • Heatwave Duration: Expected to persist till June 15

  • Region Affected: Muzaffarpur and major parts of North and Central Bihar

Why Is Bihar Facing Extreme Heat?

Senior meteorologist Dr. A. Sattar, from the Regional Weather Center, explained the cause behind the unusually high temperatures:

“Hot northwesterly and westerly winds are dominating the region. These dry air currents, known locally as ‘loo’, are preventing cloud buildup and trapping ground heat.”

The maximum daytime temperature is expected to hover between 38°C and 40°C, while minimum temperatures will remain around 25°C to 26°C. The combination of high heat and moisture is significantly elevating the heat index, making the environment feel much hotter than it is.

 The Impact: Daily Life Disrupted

 Public Movement Down

Muzaffarpur’s streets have worn a deserted look during midday hours (11 AM to 4 PM), as heat exhaustion, sunstroke cases, and dehydration complaints rise.

 Agriculture Under Stress

Farmers preparing paddy nurseries (for kharif season) are being advised to:

  • Water fields early morning or late evening

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sun

  • Cover water storage tanks to prevent evaporation

 Animal Safety Alert

Veterinary experts have also issued advisories to keep cattle in shade and ensure clean drinking water. Livestock owners are being asked to monitor signs of heat stress such as excessive panting or lack of appetite.

Will It Rain in Bihar Anytime Soon?

While isolated drizzles or light showers may occur in the coming days, the IMD has clearly stated that no widespread rainfall is expected before mid-June.

“There’s a weak chance of scattered rainfall, but it won’t provide any meaningful relief from the heatwave,” said Dr. Sattar.

The arrival of monsoon winds over Bihar is likely delayed, which could further strain agriculture and water resources in the state.

 IMD’s Public Advisory

The India Meteorological Department has issued the following precautions, especially for elderly citizens, children, and those with existing health conditions:

 Avoid Going Outdoors:

  • Between 11 AM and 4 PM

  • Particularly avoid open spaces and metal surfaces

 Stay Hydrated:

  • Drink water frequently, even if not thirsty

  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks

 Dress Appropriately:

  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothes

  • Use sunglasses, umbrellas, and sunscreen

 Food & Health Tips:

  • Eat light meals, rich in water content (e.g. fruits, curd, salads)

  • Keep ORS (Oral Rehydration Solutions) handy

  • Watch for signs of heatstroke: dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat

 Special Warning for Vulnerable Groups

Doctors at Muzaffarpur Civil Hospital have reported a spike in:

  • Heat exhaustion cases among outdoor workers

  • Hospital admissions for elderly citizens with cardiac issues

  • Children showing early signs of dehydration

Dr. Manisha Verma, a physician on duty, added:

“People with diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension are at higher risk. Avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary.”

Advice for Farmers and Rural Communities

As Bihar prepares for the upcoming kharif planting season, agriculture experts are advising:

  • Minimal physical labor during peak sun hours

  • Mulching techniques to retain soil moisture

  • Using shaded nets or temporary shelters for nursery patches

Villages are also being requested to set up community water stations and shade areas for public welfare.

 Heatwave Trends Across India

Bihar is not alone. Other states in northern and central India — including Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and parts of Madhya Pradesh — are also experiencing extreme summer conditions.

The delayed monsoon has pushed average summer temperatures 3-4°C above normal, raising concerns about climate variability and extreme weather cycles.

Climate Outlook: Is This the New Normal?

Meteorological patterns in recent years show:

  • Increased frequency of longer heatwaves

  • Rising average summer temperatures

  • More erratic monsoon behavior

Environmentalists argue that deforestation, urban heat islands, and global warming are making such heatwaves more intense and widespread across India.

 When Can Bihar Expect Relief?

According to latest IMD projections:

  • Pre-monsoon showers could begin by June 17–20

  • Full monsoon onset over Bihar expected around June 25, slightly later than average

Until then, residents are advised to remain indoors during peak hours, and local authorities are requested to distribute heatwave awareness material in both rural and urban areas.

As Bihar sizzles under a relentless pre-monsoon heatwave, prevention and awareness are key to surviving the high temperatures. While the rain gods may eventually bring relief, the next few days require collective caution, community support, and vigilance, especially for those most at risk.
